II. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

On Tuesday the 27th of November 2007 AWISH-Hellas started an educational programme at Dilinata Elementary School.

The Principal of the school along with the dynamic group of teachers and students were glad to participate in a pilot educational composting program.

The students attended a presentation which informed them on ways of reducing the amount of household waste that ends up at the landfill.

They learned about composting, the processes, principles and benefits that it invloves and which render composting a means for protecting the environment and changing their households' consuming and waste production habits.

A poster with a Table containing information on 'good' & 'bad' and also 'green' & 'brown' items for their compost bin was given to them, along with a detailed description of the reasons why some food scraps like dairy products, meat, fish etc can not be added to their compost bin.

After the presentation they enthusiastically placed the compost bin at the backyard of their school and made a promise to feed it weekly and keep a detailed diary on the "diet of their bin"! A small squad of 3 students (compost bin guardians) is responsible for reminding the rest of their school mates of the "feeding of their bin" at the end of the week!
