1. SUMMER UNIVERSITY 2006

"ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY"

With the participation of around 100 students, coming from various backgrounds, the 1st summer university that AWISH Hellas organized completed successfully. The participants filled the Environmental Center of Argostoli, which was finally used in a large extent and even became wider known to the public.

We would like to thank all the participants, the professors and the volunteers who assisted us for the comletion of this project and we are sure that the following summer university will be even better than the first one.

2. Youth exchange, September 2006

"Redevelopment of a traditional abandoned village"

Farsa village, 2- 13 September 2006

The theme of this project is “Heritage and environmental protection as a fundamental component of Rural Development and what young people can do to become key players of such a strategy”.

For 10 days 20 people from Slovenia, Spain, the Czech Republic and Greece will be living and working in Farsa village, in Kefalonia.

The program is financed by the Greek Youth Agency, through the program "Youth" of the European Union. The Farsa community is also warmly supporting our actions.

3. Projects of students participating in

Spring 2006 Study Program

On April, 20th the students, professors and the program administrators visited the premises of the Environmental Center of Katelios which is run by the same people who have founded a company producing Organic fertilizers made of sea weed.

During our visit we were shown and updated on the work that the Environmental Center takes up and is focused on the protection of the Marine environment and the Loggerhead Sea turtles (Caretta Caretta).

We also participated in the beach cleaning strategy that this NGO has already started for this year and all of us felt really proud to assisst the people and volunteers of Kateleios group. We thank them for giving us this chance to become useful to the environment, the local community as well as the turtles that prefer visiting the beaches of this area in order to give birth to their hatchelings.

4. Sustainable Water Systems Planning:

Blue Village Case Study

A Huxley College / WWU research design project funded by Proctor and Gamble

ΚΑΘΑΡΟΣ H2O

KATHAROS is an ancient Greek word meaning clean, clear and pure— The fundamental qualities of drinking water.

-News Release: March 14, 2005

Western’s Sustainable Design Team Selected By Proctor and Gamble Jury

Western Washington University , in collaboration between Huxley College (Nicholas Zaferatos) and Industrial Design (Arunas Oslapas) was one of 3 proposals selected nationally to develop solutions to global problems through sustainable design. The theme of the program is "Improving the lives of the world’s consumers in underdeveloped or lower income countries or markets." Participants were asked to identify and solve a problem—in an area such as water purification, personal sanitation or personal healthcare—to improve the lives of consumers.

The 2004-2005 Proctor and Gamble / IDSA Interdisciplinary Student Design Collaborative selected Western’s proposal along with proposals from Arizona State University and the University of California , Berkley / the California College of the Arts in San Francisco .  Each school was awarded $40,000 to develop their design solutions.

Western’s project team seeks to help remote communities to become self-reliant in meeting their safe drinking water needs in an affordable and environmentally sustainable manner. “A community’s self reliance is closely dependent upon its ability to maintain its own water system and to monitor its quality and distribution. Self-monitoring of a local water supply provides a high level of assurance that the water is safe and distribution is equitable.”

Water supply and purification problems associated with the use of rainwater in rural, isolated communities is the focus of Western’s design challenge. “Our project applies appropriate technology design solutions to solve water quality problems in rural, isolated communities.”  The team undertook an interdisciplinary approach during winter 2005 to develop technological systems solutions in a culturally sustainable manner to meet the water resource requirements in a case study community – “ Blue Village ” -- a historic rural mountain village. The case study is part of Huxley/Western’s applied foreign studies program in community sustainable development on the Island of Kefalonia , Greece .  Lessons learned through this adaptive planning and design process are applicable to other rural communities throughout the world that have historically depended upon rainwater as a primary source.

5. PAST CONFERENCES

"Sustainable Development Conference"

The Conference that welcomed AWISH in Greece!

September 29 - October 3, 2005
"Imagining a Sustainable Future: the Rebirthing of Blue Village"

Dr Brad Smith

Conference participation represented the AWISH International Board, AWISH affiliates, IASBO, Schumaker ¹97 Ecology of Commerce/Natural Step Participants, AWISHhellas, Kefalonia University program faculty and students, DRATTE members (Greek sustainable tourism organization, our conference co-host), and Greek professionals, academics, and government officials engaged in sustainable development.

Conference objectives:

  1. To establish new relationships among our International AWISH community
  2. To celebrate the emergence of AWISHhellas and its activities in Greece
  3. To provide a forum for discussing current themes in sustainable development
  4. To discuss sustainability issues facing Greece
  5. To experience sustainable Greek communities
  6. To apply international knowledge, concepts and ideas to the Kefalonia/Greece context
  7. To infuse ideas and approaches for AWISHhellas’ undertaking in Kefalonia -- planning the sustainable redevelopment of "Blue Village"

Conference Format:

The conference emphasized informal interactions among participants, featured guest speakers, facilitators guiding small talking circles in sustainability topics, walking tour in Blue Village, and venues that included some of the Island’s most exquisite outdoor sites where we will host talks and conversations, artistic performances, and of course, the customary long nights over great food and drink, conversation and, of course, music, in outdoor “taverna” settings around the island.

The conference combined informal discussions with presentations to provide a context for our conference themes, which include: approaches to sustainable village planning ( Blue Village ), problems facing sustainable tourism, technology, green building, energy systems, preservation of traditional community values, and other themes. Ideas generated at the conference will help Kefalonia in their pursuit of sustainable development, and will help AWISHhellas to devise a methodology to guide redevelopment planning for Blue Village – our case community.
