Design Charrettes

AWISHhellas provides Design Charrette technical services to local and regional communities. An international, interdisciplinary professional team evaluates sustainable community development potential in several host communities in Greece. Each Charrette is hosted by a local community. The emphasis of the investigation is to identify strategies towards sustainable community development for the case study communities, with emphasis in green building practices, energy self sufficiency, smart growth, urban containment, regional design, environmental resource management, sustainable economic development, and historically and culturally appropriate urban design.

Design Team Composition

The international Charrette team is comprised of professionals and academics from Western and Eastern European nations, Greece, and the United States. The interdisciplinary team incorporates broad expertise that includes urban and regional planning, design and architecture, economic development, tourism, civil engineering, and program design and budgeting.

Design Charrette Structure

Several days are devoted to each case study community. A briefing paper provides participants background prior to arrival, and work is supported by local, knowledgeable staff and the political leadership. The Charrette identifies problems and opportunities to sustainable community development and recommends a development program for further investigation as well as a process for plan development and implementation in each of the host communities. Following the field experience, team participants complete their individual and group design contributions and a Recommendations Report is published and presented to the host communities. The Design Charrette invests a minimum of 5 days in each community.
