AWISHhellas is a nonprofit educational corporation (NGO) registered in Greece and in the United States ( Washington State ) organized to promote understanding and education in community sustainable development. AWISHhellas administers a U.S. sponsored university program on Kefalonia,emphasizing applied research in sustainable development practices. AWISHhellas’ objective is to promote understanding and education in community sustainable development.  The NGO’s activities include the development of model programs, applied research, seminars, academic programs and university partnerships, workshops and activities which demonstrate sustainable community development to promote a community’s social, economic and environmental well being. Programs include:a)community spiritual health, wellness and wellbeing, b) social-interaction, c) community service, d) social, economic and environmental justice, e) community self determination, f) environmental education and natural resources protection, g) energy sustainability and recycling, h) biodiversity, i) sustainable economic development, j) cultural and architectural enrichment, and k) creative artistic expression and endeavors including fine and performing arts.

An applied study abroad curriculum in sustainable development

AWISHhellas operates in Kefalonia a 11 - week interdisciplinary academic university program sponsored by Huxley College of the Environment, Western Washington University, in association with AHA International, the University of Oregon, and the Northwest Council of Study Abroad Universities (NCSA). The program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in the fields of sustainable and landscape design, urban and regional planning, environmental studies, architecture, geography, community development and social anthropology.

Students enrolled in the program mainly are working towards the production of redevelopment plans for Farsa village, our Venetian - era case study community as well as sustainable development policies for the island. They work closely with community representatives to develop design alternatives for the reconstruction of this once sustainable community while preserving the historic and social integrity of the traditional community.
